Hello All!
Recently, I've been experiencing something weird when driving my beloved Primera (P11 1.6). The problem at first: When I was driving in reverse (for example parking) and I stepped on the brake pedal I heard some very weird sound. It's hard to describe, but it's like a sound of some heavy resonation or vibration. I wasn't able to locate it, but (sounded like) it came from somewhere the steering wheel / dashboard. Later, it happened several times. The problem now: The same problem happens again and again, even when I'm driving forward. It always happens on very low speed. When starting, stopping or driving below ~6 miles/h (10km/h). Since it happened always during parking (when using the power steering), at first I thought, maybe something was wrong with the power steering, but: 1. I don't feel anything on the steering wheel. 2. If I move the streering wheel to the left and right quickly when the problem occurs, it doesn't have any effect on that strange sound. 3. During the last few driving the problem occured even when I was driving straight. Sometimes I also noticed, that when this strange sound came up, the break pedal felt quite weird. It's something like when the ABS works in real situation. So, I started to think, that the problem can be related to the ABS. However, there's no warning light. (When I turn on the ignition, the ABS check light turns on and off normally.) Unfortunately, this problem occurs by random, so I'm not able to take a video and show that strange sound. Could you give me some basic advice, please, where/what should I check at first? Thank you very much in advance! |

Is the Power steering fluid topped up to correct level and no leaks?

Could be a cracked or dirty ABS Ring.
I had this on my P11 When coming to a stop at low speed (5-10MPH) the ABS would sometimes kick in causing a chugging noise and also could be felt through the Brake Pedal. Braking from higher speed was fine. It was just the final stopping. My local Independant Garage fitted a new CV Joint.

If - as imckay suggests - it's broken ABS rings the warning light might only appear at 60mph+.
That's my experience with my P12 (that's just been waxed). It's worth a go. If the light appears you can get the garage to pull a code. Good luck |

Thank you very much for all your help!
d60_tag, yes, the power steering fluid level is OK and there's no leak. Thank you for the video! The noise what I experience is definitely different. Actually, reading the other comments, I searched videos related to ABS problem and I found this one. I hear the same noise what you can hear at 2:32 and 2:40: https://youtu.be/7ve-eoHph2M?t=150 imckay, stephen2079, your experiences sound the same to mine. I think next week I'll have some free time to look around the ABS. |

Yes- have heard that about cracked rings and the error light only kicking in at speed. Worth inspecting all the rings anyway and giving them a clean. You can do ABS Self Diag on P11 yourself without the need for a garage test : http://www.npoc.co.uk/forum/p11-abs-system-diagnostic_topic48583.html As to if it may show any error, maybe not if the warning light is not coming on anyway but maybe worth a try as it may show up something possibly. |

d60_tag, thank you very much, I really appreciate it!
On Friday or Saturday I'm planning to do a basic "look around" & cleaning. Since the problem isn't constant, I hope maybe it's some wiring problem, rust or something similar. Yes, definitely the ABS system diagnostic is worth a try! After having some diagnosis / result, I will write it here, maybe later it will be useful for others, too. |

If you will be tempted to take out the ABS sensor, be careful, it's most likely stuck inside and you will break it if you use excessive force. There's another way to clean it (and the ABS right) but i wouldn't know how to explain in English. Maybe someone else...
