Hi all,
I'm looking to finally getting around to fitting a set of cams and timing chain kit fitted. I was quoted 20 hours work from a garage. Wanted to confirm does that sound right? The garage recommended I change the oil pump too since that will need to be removed also when fitting new chain? Apologies for lack of knowledge here. Little afraid I'm being quoted incorrectly. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Bob |

yeah to change the oil pump when doing the chain makes sense, it is something that will come off, so might as well...

Cool makes sense. Does the amount of time required sound right?
Never done a change of either so not sure what's involved. |

A much quicker and cheaper solution would of been to put another engine in with the cams you want to fit,but I know finding one can be difficult..
Just that is not an area you want to cheap out on to make it worthwhile , if you were to fit a new oem or conceptua etc oil pump/chain kit then add up the labour costs (a long time since the engine is still in place) it's going to cost a fortune and tbh an old de engine isn't worth spending that much on unless it was being totally rebuilt. What is the actual reason for wanting to change it? Just seeing is there's any other solution first.. |

Had the noise you get from a noisy timing chain tensioner. I'm afraid the chain might possibly be stretched but not sure. Noise goes away after the engine has warmed up. Been YouTubing every sr20 with a stretched timing chain and mine doesn't sound like that. I wasn't sure so preparing myself for the worst. I also have some high lift cams I always want fitted.
This is something I do want to make into a track day hobby. Not after great power as I have the skyline for that. Just want it to be safe and fun around the track. I'm gonna give it a flush and oil change as definitely due. If I can get away with just the tensioner and cams, then that would be ideal. Else may save up and try and source a forged engine instead. |
