    Posted: 22 Apr 2011 at 10:38pm

Hi all, I just thought I should pass on my recent gut churning experience I had with my newly aquired 2004 P12 estate DCi. Twice now I have set my handbrake on a hill and a few minutes later the car slips handbrake and rolls down the hill with its handbrake still in the pulled up position, the first time this happened my wife with quick thinking pulled the handbrake another notch and brought the car to a halt. Then last night I parked it at the top of my freinds drive, and again minutes later it  rolled down the drive and ran into the front of his house! This time NO WIFE to save the day.

My warning to anyone with a p12 with disc brakes on the rear is not to trust your handbrake when parked on a slope, best to leave in gear as well.

damage this time was a dented scratched  front bumper, scratched n/s headlamp.

You should always park in gear anyway, if not then at least turn the wheels towards the curb.

check the rear brakes are not binding- if they get hot it is possible for the rear disks and pads to contract when they cool resulting in the handbrake not gripping as tight as when first applied

The car rolls freely will on the flat, I do believe the rear brakes are fine, but yes your right, from now on I will try to leave in gear.

It's just the way i was taught when learning how to drive, only thing is.... i was also taught to depress the clutch pedal when starting the engine so i never have to worry about it being in gear and jumping into the car i'm parked behind, if you are not in the habit of leaving the car in gear, try to remember to start this way.

I accept no responsibility for any accidents lolLOL

Also, you should be able to adjust the handbrake, if you look down the rubber you should see the adjusting nut, probably need a 10mm deep reach socket to do it.

Norbert +1. l learnt that when l was into the Citroen Xantia. Although the handbrake was on the front wheels the same problem. Take the car out on a pacy but braking run. Pull the parking brake on and when the discs cooled and contracted away from the pads, goodbye Xantia.

You can't beat drums for a positive parking brake get them hot pull on the parking brake and when the drum cools down it contracts onto the shoes not away from them

Vauxhall Vectra has a warning about this in its handbook.
