Hi Folks,

I have an airbag warning light on my dash, I have had an auto electrician come and look at the code we identified what and where the fault is. Its an earth fault in the drivers seat unit (in the side curtain bag ) we thought we fixed it by adding insulating tape to the seat frame where the wire was in contact, this worked for 12 hours and the next time we turned the car on the fault re-appeared on the dash.

I want to take the seat out of the car and have a good look at the wiring and connectors between the unit and the main loom, I have not worked on car electrics before (though I am a competent household electrician) but I am presuming I need to remove the power (remove the battery wire) to ensure the bag does not go off either when I disconnect it from the loom or reattach it to the loom.

I then intend to insulate every connection and every point of contact between wire and metal seat frame, if anyone has any advice I would be more than grateful.

Disconnect battery and press brake peddle several times to discharge any risidual power in circulation. Wait for 30mins after just to be double sure (probably a bit overkill but I like to wait for a bit). Then you can handle the airbag system safely.

Driver Seat is the most common cause of the Airbag Light on the P12

Usually a few unplugs and replugs of the Connector under the Seat sorts it.

You can get the Airbag error codes and reset yourself

Turn ignition on without starting engine

Wait till airbag light flashes and turn ignition off

wait three seconds and complete process and least 4 times

Worked for me although I only completed process earlier today, been out in car twice since and airbag light not flashing.

Actually the process is:

1 (with diesel, make sure the engine is warm from driving. With petrol you don't need to bother with this)

2 Let the engine and ignition be off for at least 10 minutes.

3 Get in the car, close all doors

4 Turn ignition on. Wait for the airbag light to go out (about 7 seconds).

5 While the airbag light is off, before it relightens, turn the ignition key to off (not acc)

6 Wait for 5 seconds (i think 3 to 7 seconds is the valid timeframe.

Do step 4 to 6 three times (repeat two times). Now, when you turn the ignition on you'll see that the air bag light blink pattern has changed. By counting the blinks you can read the fault code if you bother.

Do step 4-6 three more times. Then the fault code will be deleted and the system performs a self diagnosis. If the fault is fixed, it will no longer indicate a fault.

I've been doing this every time someone with significantly longer/shorter legs than me has borrowed my car. A few times it doesn't work. Usually that I've missed the timeframe for turning ignition on or off. In those cases I just redo the process next time I'm driving to the store. This has been the case for my car ever since I bought it 9 years ago.
