Again thanks for the replies gents. However, this is a fine time for the torch to have made itself scarce!! Cant check the oil levels yet but funnily enough, the CVT light isnt on anymore. Tried it twice in 15 min intervals but no light. Only the engine management light is on now! Think the car is trying to confuse me!! grrrrrr....

Engine management light is on to tell you that there are trouble codes stored in the ECM - which are all listed in the link given previously. The CVT light only flashes for 8 seconds if there is a trouble code in the TCM unit and the transmission is in fail safe mode.
You would be best reading the ECM trouble code and comparing it to the charts given by ANT- DAT, that would give a good indication of the problem with the transmission. Complex aint it?
Check the transmission fluid first. It uses NS1 fluid ONLY - from the dealers - no other auto transmission fluid must be used.
The fault codes for the step motor are 1777 and 1778
The throttle position sensor is 1705
transmission fluid pressure faults are 1791 and 0745

UPDATE
The oil seems to be fine for the CVT. The CVT light has not flashed again since last night. Car seems to be running fine at the moment. Had a silly busy day yesterday so no chances of checking anything.
Bit of a silly bugger question now, what do I use to bridge the terminals on the DLC?
I know I'm being a pain but really do appreciate all the help here!

You can use a thin paperclip or piece of wire. The terminals are quite small on the 144 and can be awkward.
Another option would be a code reader/resetter that you plug into the car. They start at around £20.
Have a google/ebay for OBD2 or OBDII reader.
