now let me get this right, or i n laymen terms. The orange light that looks like an engine is supposed to come on when you turn the ignition on, just before you start the car and then goes out when the car is running. As well as this light coming on the battery, ABS which goes off 2 seconds later, the oil light, hand brake light, and the air bag light which all go off when car is started except the brake light which goes off when you take the hand brake off. Only the ABS light is orange and no orange engine light comes on at the start

If it does not come on before starting, then yes, your light is not working. Then you can press the pedals however long you like, you're not going to get codes flashing.
You'd better get a cheap OBD code reader then. Or find a neighbor who has one. Or a local garage willing to help you out.

Edit: I don't think there is a separate fuse just for the MIL. but maybe someone else can tell for sure.

Why do you want to reset the ECU ?  Turn on ignition, light comes on, as you fire up it switches off.  If you have a fault on the P12, you can't miss it as the computer system goes bing bong, and a big picture pops up on the screen !

No light, or no bing bong, then you are OK ! Wink

You can reset the ECU by leaving the negative terminal off the battery overnight anyway !

I have just purchased a 2003 SE and a little concerned that the fuel economy was around 26mpg after a round trip of about 100 miles (both city centre and motorway). The EML has been on constantly. I am trying to eliminate possible issues it is useful to reset the ecu. Thanks for the info on resetting the EML. After several attemps it finally worked.

I have squirted  Wynns EGR cleaner into the air intake as it was suggested that the dirt in the EGR may have been  the issue that flagged up the warning light.
I hope this had worked. I anybody has any other ideas I would appricate a reply. (please in laymans terms) and that can be carried out without specialised tools.

Hi and welcome to NPOC.

Did you get to read what code was flashing when you did the reset? That would point you at a fault region.
A sequence of short flashes separated by pauses forms a code, 1 short is a 1, 2 short is a 2 etc.

Start by downloading the service manual from the how to section.
If in doubt give it a clout!

Yeah, what he ^^^ says.
Chances are you will get the code back again. If and when it does, look in the EC section of the manual to check what each code means.

The MIL lamp is used to flash out any fault codes.
Each code consists of four digits.
The first digit of any code consists of a group of slowish pulses/flashes followed by three groups of faster pulses followed by a pause whereafter it repeats unless another code exists.
So eg 0322 would be 10 slow flashes followed by three lots of faster flashes consisting of 3 flashes, 2 flashes ,2 flashes.
Zero is represented by 10 flashes.
If in doubt give it a clout!
