Hello. I'm new to npoc and hope I'm posting correctly. I'm driving a nissan primera 1.8 P12 manual saloon 2002. When I start d car in d morning the rev meter fluctulates for a while and engine stops.. I have to restart it a few times before the rev meter stops fluctulating. Now it's getting worse and I fear it might not start one morning. But once the engine gets running it is okey for the day and I have the same problem next morning. Can you please help.

Hi and welcome to the forumHandshake
Could be a faulty MAF or maybe a spark plug is fouled. try disconnecting the maf to see if it makes a difference

Thanks, just back from d garage. They said timing belt needs replacing. They are quoting £400. Car probably is only worth around £500. Is there anyway timing belt can be repaired/ adjusted without replacing?

It's not got a timing belt,it's got a timing chain...If it's worn or stretched, it can only be replaced unfortunately.

Yes sorry timing chain.. I just spoke to him. He said he can try adjusting it for £150. Does this work? Finances are tight so was wondering if it's worth a go or will I end up spending for timing chain anyway plus £150. I just need a temporary fix for 6 months or so and I can get a new car. Should I risk 'adjusting' or is it a bad idea. Thanks

What are you planning on doing with it after the 6 months? Sell it or scrap it?

I guess just scrap it or if I sell it It won't be for more than couple of hundred pounds. Have u heard 'adjusting' worked? Thanks for ur link as well. I'll check it.

The chain tensioner normally adjusts the chain as it wear's gradually over time, however if it's worn to the point where the tensioner can't adjust anymore, then it's the chain you still need. You can check this by seeing how much the tensioner is protruding, the limit is 12 mm.

Normally if the chain is worn, you maybe get a EML on or intermittently.Hard startings problem, bad idle, loss of power, misfiring, excessive rattling.

thanks for d explaination very helpful. The symptoms of worn chain is all there except rattling. I guess for now if there's a chance for temporary fix without replacing I'll go for it. Fingers crossed. I'll update u by d end of next week. Thanks again for taking ur time to help.
