One thing worth checking,is for the pcv sticking/gummed up,as that can lead to oil consumption,it's located at the back of the engine cover, you see a hose from it going to the intake area, pull out the valve from the cover and shake it,it should rattle(little spring inside) if it's free and clean, if it doesn't rattle, clean it with carb/brake cleaner till it clean.

The 2.7l of oil is for a full oil change + filter change. It looks like you are going to have to be very careful on checking the oil level and ensure it does not get low

Hello. I have just driven to Le Mans and back, a round trip of approx 1400 miles. i had a full oil change before leaving. By the time I had got back I had had to put another 2 litres in. I took it to my normal garage this morning who say that this is not unusual given the distance and also that the engine has been at high revs for most of that time (he commented that he has a mercedes where after runs to london he has to put another litre in also, not sure if this is relevant though).. There is no oil leak and there is no smoke coming from the exhaust so somehow it must be burning the oil. Emissions are fine.
Is the garage correct in what they say? The way I see it i have 4 options 1 Keep refilling the oil every 600miles or so with a litre 2 Ask the garage to strip the engine to see where the oil is being used 3 have another engine put in the car. 4 buy a new car (which i really don't want to do). One thing I have noticed is the erratic nature of the level showing on the dip stick. eg. I got to Le Mans, waited 10mins per the manual and checked the dipstick. it was showing halfway between the bottom of the stick and the minimum point. So, I put a litre in and then the level showed at maximum. i would not have expected 1 litre to make such a change showing on the dipstick? Any thoughts on this? many thanks. |

All engines vary on oil usage, some will burn oil, some will not, if your car is running ok apart from that I would not worry to much. I always check my oil once a week, first thing in the morning before starting the engine as the oil is cold and has had time to settle overnight.

Here we got our oilman and you can always ask him.
If you want to listen to my advice then I can tell you to change for the Motul X-Cess 5W-40 for all the Primeras petrol engines. Motul is the brand (AFAIK the only one on the market) that can legally put "100% synthetic" on their oils ... all the rest are just pathetic "fully synthetic" :-P That should tell you something. As the man in oil business I have checked many different kind of oil grades in different engines, different conditions, usage. For now I'm not related to any company so I won't get any profit from advising you hence you can take my words quite reasonable. There are some reasons for engines to have the problem with oil consumption. Some of them are related with the mechanical reasons (particular design of the engine, wear and tear of the internal parts, some particular functionality and usage of the engine, etc.) and some are related with the oil (quality, viscosity vs. engine needs etc.). I'm not a engineer specialised in internal combustion engines so I leave it to someone else but I can tell you a few things about the lubricants. The problem with oil consumption, if it is oil related, is that the used lubricant could not hold the temperature and the pressure in the engine and fell apart. The oil film was broken or the oil changed its original characteristic or both. Synthetic oil is (or at least should be) built like the custom made suit, tailored. It is constructed in the way we want it to be in the final... if it is 100% synthetic. If it is not that means some of it is just randomised and can't be what we want it to be. The oil in chemical way is the chain and I presume all of know how to judge the strength of the chain ... now you know where you have the weakest link .

Sounds to me like that is using a hell of alot of oil, my old P11 wagon uses hardly anything, think I topped it up about 1/4litre in 1 year! Keep mine at the high mark and it doesn't seem to go down at all. As Primeragt has said the capacity using the dipstick is 1 litre thereabouts between low and high indicator marks, so if you are tipping in over a litre and it causes it to go from low to full then that sounds about right. |
