Good evening all. I'm in the process of getting the rust sorted on the bodywork of my Gtle. The front wings are quite bad so I'm going to replace them completely. However the offside rear wheel arch has quite a lot of rust coming through. I have found a couple of "old boy" fabricators and bodywork specialists who have advised I source a rear arch to chop into the bodywork thus removing the enviable rust coming back through. The only place that sells the part is in Bulgaria!
So my question is, is indeed there a separate arch body panel which is replaceable on the rear quarter? The near side panel is not in bad condition so fixable in situ. Plus has anyone actually stripped the rear arches properly so the rust does not come back through. All the reputable bodywork people in this area won't do rusty arches as they know they don't last! |

Its fairly common with them,as is with a lot of old cars,it's a high impact area after all...Anyways the good news is that you can get repairs sections from the UK.
It's better to chop out and weld new in and not only that it lets you see the condition and sort out (if needed) the inner skin that joins to the outer skin. |

Not sure if you're allowed to say (forum rules) but where can you source the rear arch panel from? I'm really keen on preserving the le as they are not too common.

I got my arches shipped from (i expect) the same place that you have seen in bulgaria as even after shipping were around half the cost of the UK panels.
Unless you are happy to do quite a lot of adjustment for fitment they are probably not the best option. I spent a long time getting the arch itself lined up and in the right place but the rear sill section then was way out of line. I had to cut a section out of the corner and bring the sill section up about an inch. I've no experience with elsewhere but i wouldnt recommend bulgaria =) |
