This is my first post, so apologies if I B*lls it up.

I have a 99 V reg. P11 144 1.8S (engine code QG18DE) with 130K on the clock. I've owned the car for several weeks and up 'til now it's run pretty well.
I drove the car to work today and again during my lunch break, however during the journey home (approx. 10 miles) the engine started to judder/miss-fire.
On the driveway it continued to miss-fire whilst idling and continued to do so when I took it out for again this evening; however, on the way back home everything seems to have returned to normal??
I've read the posts about coil packs, MAF's and sensors, but the one I dread is the timing chain!! Any advice is most welcome, thanks

Hi there and a big welcome to NPOC,

If the chain was goosed or stretched it wouldn't be these symptoms.

My money (as you already know) would be on a dicky coil pack or MAF.

Enjoy the forums and take care,
Shaun

Hi Shaun, thanks for the welcome.

How can I tell if it's a coil pack? I haven't lifted a spanner in anger in more than 20 years and my knowledge of cars, up to now, has been limited.

Thanks

Coil packs are built into each spark plug lead on the 1.8 engine. You can see them on the top of the engine rocker cover - they ared secured with a screw to the RC and pull out of the block exposing the spark plugs. They are prone to failure and can be bought from Ebay fairly cheaply.
The next time it misfires, disconnect each one, one by one and see which one, when removed makes the engine run no worse - this will be the faulty one.
Check the contacts between the coilpack and the spark plug for damage or looseness too.
Sometimes, the misfire will be so bad that it makes the MIL light on the dash flash on and off, with an error code corresponding to the faulty coilpack.

Stevie J, you say to check the contacts between the coilpack and the spark plug for damage or looseness. Sorry if this is a lame question, but do i undo the screw securing the coil pack and then check for looseness or do I check it while it is still secured?

So far I've not had any warning lights come on. How do I know that the MIL light is connected and that someone hasn't removed the bulb. Also, do the error codes appear on the dash?

Thanks

Could my problem have anything to do with pressure washing the engine on Sunday?? The engine started straight away afterwards and ran OK up until 5ish today?? Could it just be a coincidence??

Thanks

It could well do, may have taken some time for any water to get into the connections for one of the coils, or even between the coil and the plug.

now may be a good time to take each coil out, clean it down with WD40 or similar, wipe off with a dry cloth. Then re-assemble.

A Factory Service Manual for the 144 can be downloaded here:

not sure if non members can see the "how to" section but if you can, download it.

I'm going to try to get a coil pack from ebay or the breakers yard.  Are there lots of types to choose from? Do they vary according to engine size and spec. i.e S, SE?

Confused

Thanks
