Hi everyone, new guy here.
So my P11 started to make a rattling noise. At first it was only on cold startup (which as i understand is normal) but it now became constant after the last time it's been driven harder than usual. Oil and filters have been changed about 1500 miles ago. Checked the tensioner and it's already been changed at some point, upper chain guide has also been removed. Any ideas on what else can the problem be?

Could be a oiling problem ie not enough pressure to tension the chain properly.

Could be tensioner defective, is it the newer version with finer adjustment fitted now if not change it.

Possibly worn chain guides, stretched chain, worn gears. Probably all those together. Replace the whole kit, you can get a OEM japanese (Tsubaki) one from ebay quite cheap. Swapping is pretty easy, no need to take the head off, unlike what the FSM tells you. You get everything you need (Chain, sprockets, thensioner, guides, gaskets). Btw, the JDM chain is actually thicker than the original european chain, which happens to be made by renold. I would also measure what kind of oil pressure your engine has.

Well that's what i thought, is it hard to change the chain yourself? Also, if there wasn't enough oil pressure the oil light would pop up on the dash, wouldn't it?

Yes it would flicker...or stay on until you rev the car.
To check slack whip off the rocker cover and and check the chain slackness.
It should be tight from cam pulley to cam pully...unless you have it @top dead centre on the Crank pulley.

Well it doesn't flicker or anything so pressure isn't the problem.
It's kinda tight(ish) but i assume not tight enough.

Any power loss? What mileage on the engine?

Remember it wont be as slack once it's got oil pressure.

The oil pressure light needs only 0,2 bar (2,9 psi) pressure to turn off. So no, even if it turns off you could still have dangerously low oil pressure. The only way to be really sure is to manually measure it by temporarily replacing the pressure switch with a manual gauge. FSM states that minimal oil pressure when warm is 11psi (0,78kg/cm2, 0,75 bar) at idle and at 3200rpm it should be anywhere between 46-57 psi ( 3.2 - 4.0kg/cm2, 3.14 - 3.92bar). Never rely on the warning light if you have any suspicions about oil pressure. If it turns on, it is already too late, the damage is done.

The best and most accurate method of checking chain wear is to inspect the tensioner's piston. It should extract less than 10mm. If it is near 10mm or over that, then you must replace your chain ASAP. You need to measure the distance between the edge next to the pin and the tensioner housing.

On both of these images the chain is way too worn and should be replaced.
