hello i have posted this before but can find the topic. i have a nissan primera p11 144 18s yr 2000 when i start the car there is a noise coming i think is the altnator belt. when under load how do i check it. i read somewhere that to spray pentrating oil on belt would that not cause it to slip more.

or would it be the bearing in the altnator. are the belt easy changed and their is another belt in behind is this the water pump or power steering even when ticking over you can here a slight noise thanks for any help pat.

Have a look at the belt see if its loose or old, I have a squeal on my micra and I changed the alternator belt and it hasn't made a peep since

to check if your alternator bearing has gone you will need to remove the belt and turn the pulley, if it sounds harsh it may need some wd40 or replacing
Theres nothing crap about jap!!

When the noise is really bad, often the noise is made by the worn sides of the belt rubbing on the pulley edges so tightening has no effect.  The WD40 isn't meant as a fix, only as a means for identifying the problem.

i have/had this problem i thought it was old belts so had them changed for new ones but still had a noise, the only way i can get rid of the noise is a bit of chalk, hold a bit of chalk with long nose pilars on the sides of the belt and if noise goes away theirs your problem belt rubbing on the pulleys. i havent investigated to see if one of the pulley bearings are shot but mine comes and goes so not to fused at the minute .

My belts, especially the power steering belt, couldn't have been any louder- they were really bad.  I've had Gates belts on for what must be 40 or 50,000m and they're still silent FWIW.
