Nissan Primera 2004 (post facelift) P12, 1.9dci (F9Q)

As the weather turned hot, the AC stopped cooling. It worked all winter for defrosting. When AC button is pressed, the AC light comes on, AC is shown in display and fan speeds up automatically. But the air flow doesn't cool down and there is no change to the engine sound when starting AC on idle. (I'm quite sure I could hear the rpm drop a tiny bit when pressing the button while engine was idling before this problem occurred.)

In FSM page ATC79 it's says: "confirm that the compressor clutch engages (sound or visual inspection)". As I can't hear the clutch engage I imagine two possible causes: 1) electrical circuit faulty (shouldn't that cause the AC light to stay off?) or 2) clutch engages, but the compressor is broken so there is no extra load on the engine even when the clutch is engaged.

So I'd like to do the visual inspection. How do I do that? Where do I look in order to perform this visual inspection?

I would think it more likely that you have lost your gas, this automatically disengages the clutch to prevent damage as there is no lubrication.

Is that an electrical sensor checking gas pressure? Is there a way to read data from this sensor?

Even better, there is a full AC self diagnostic test you can run, however because it is a full test it is too complicated to replicate here

I recommend you download the free electronic service manual following the link below

Section ATC should sufficeThumbs Up

there is also a self diagnostic on the hidden menu

As far as I can see, the self diag doesn't really do anything more than checking if the LED's work, and if it has connection with the sensors. It doesn't make any tests if the data is out of normal range for a working system. At least I didn't learn anything from the self diag - it just showed exactly what FSM describes. What the test actually should do is to show the sensors values, like when testing inside temperature sensor, the inside temperature should be shown. If it shows 10 degrees when you know the temperature is at least 40 degrees, you know the sensor data is wrong. The system cannot tell if the 10 degrees it reads from the sensor is right or wrong.

Gas pressure sensor is not mentioned as part of the self diag nor in the electrical circuit diagrams as far as I could see.

Across here if you go for a re-gas the system will not charge the system if it detects the leak and the garage does not charge, this happened to me, I took it to a specialist and they did a free check to conclude the condenser had a hole in it, again no charge. Looking through the FSM apart from seeing if the clutch engages it looks like you need to manually check the pressure.

Did you try changing the air filter if that isn’t working then it’s the Motor Fan Resistor just above the clutch with two screws

Motor fan resistor? That sounds like something for the ventilation fan, not for the AC. Are you sure that is related to the AC? (Ventilation fan is working, just that it blows warm air on hot days even when AC is on.
(I haven't had the time to go to a repair shop for checking gas.)
