Hello everyone,
I have an issue which has started since Friday that I can't really understand. The alarm went off for some reason on Friday morning, after going through the usual who is messing about with my car scenario, all seemed well, switched it off using the fob and then locked the car again, it was ok for a couple of hours and it did it again, so switched it off again, then at night it went off, so I got up and just switched off the alarm and left the doors unlocked. Surprisingly the alarm went off again after a while! So I unhooked the positive terminal and left it. All was fine when I hooked up the battery again, started ok although I have noticed over the winter period the battery isn't turning the starter over as fast as it once did. But it still continues to alarm after a period of time wether the doors are locked or not. So currently when I am not driving it I unhook the battery to save peeing off the neighbours as you just know its bound to go off in the middle of the night. Any ideas why this might be happening now ? I was thinking it may be battery related but the battery still starts the car even it if does not feel as if it is turning the car over as fast as usual but don't really want to buy a battery if it turns out not to be the case, as outgoings are at a premium with the current situation. If anyone has previous experience with this or know what is causing it that can let me know it would be appreciated. Cheers Graham

I think you assumptions are correct, car alarms do tend to go off when there is a voltage drop and this can occur during periods of cold. If it is managing to turn the car over it seems a pity but perhaps if it is struggling it is only a matter of time before it lets you down. Have you tried a an overnight trickle charge?

Hi Timeshock,
Yes I did a trickle charge a while back, I have had a bit of an idea the battery efficiency is declining somewhat. It might have to be a battery change as otherwise all seems well with the car as a whole. I am surprised the car alarms though when I have locked the doors and left them unlocked it still alarms ? I thought that disengaged the alarm ? Cheers Graham

The alarm in one of my P12's tend to go off as well, if the conditions are "right". The conditions that seems to set it off is when outside temperature is in the range 0-5C and decreasing, and the air humidity is high. It also seems to be more frequent when parked with the front slightly downhill. It's been like that for the 11 years I've had the car. My workaround has been to lock the car using the button near the handbrake before closing the drivers door (LHD model, might be left front door on RHD models). I noticed in my other P12 the alarm sensor near the inside mirror was removed before I bought it. In this car I've never had any false alarms, so I guess this sensor is the troublemaker.

Just an update on the random alarm issue.
I decided to buy a new battery and immediately noticed a much stronger faster turnover of the starter motor and the car seemed (in my mind) to have a bit more of a zip about it driving around. All was well until the next day and yep the car alarm went off mid afternoon.... Switched it off remotely and just left it at that. Didn't go off again, but the car drivers side now is unlocked, unless it re-locked itself and re-armed the alarm if I didn't enter the car in a certain time. Didn't check. Driven it around today and all is well, used the fob to lock the doors and 11.30pm woke me out of my sleep the bloody alarm is going off again !! switched it off remotely again, the car is on a driveway and pretty secure so generally happy to leave it with the alarm switched off. Alarm went off again about 15 mins later even though it was switched off via the key. So now have to get up and once again remove the battery cable to ensure it wont repeat and piss off both me and the neighbours during the night. So I am pretty certain that it is not the battery, new one glowing green through the battery condition window. Starts beautifully and notice a considerable improvement. The temp was 4 degrees at the time. However the car was alarming previously at a variety of temperatures, not sure how many were above/below 5 degrees but yep we have had a prolonged cold snap so possibly. Never ever had a alarm issue in the 6 years and 60,000 miles I have had it, always super reliable, so not sure why now it should choose to alarm if the temperature maybe having a bearing ? So tomorrow will be trying the PetterG workaround suggestion, connect the battery back up and after removing the key from the ignition, lock the car using the button near the handbrake and monitor the alarm during the day see if it does go off again if I use that method of securing the car without the random alarm issue. Not sure why its deciding to alarm after I reset using the fob, unless its because I don't open the car door after clicking the unlock button on the key. Thinking it may reset itself after a period of time if the drivers side door is opened in case the car is accidentally unlocked via the key and the car is just sat their unlocked ? Will let you know the outcome after a weekends trial of using the internal lock button. Cheers G.

I remember a member having an issue of how the car was parked on unstable surface, and the movement sensor would detect it. aslo feeling vibration if something big rumbled by at speed.
I might be looking at anything that could cause a voltage drop, a dodgy internal light, maybe a door, boot, bonnet sensor which is sticking, bent or allowing moisture. Sorry just going through the possibles

Unlock with fob without opening any doors for 7? minutes, will make the car lock and reengage the alarm. There are two ways to lock the car without engaging the alarm. 1)
Keep drivers door open (LHD models, might be passenger door on RHD
models), all other doors must be closed. Press the lock button in center
console. Close the door. 2) (I've only read this, never
tried) Lock the car using fob lock button. Once the car has flashed its
lights, press unlock on the fob. Before the lights are done flashing,
press lock again. I guess you could test if this engages the alarm by
doing this while you sit in the car. If you can move around in there
after the alarm is armed (the flashing key symbol in the dashboard goes
from fast blinks to slow blinks). I think
it's the level of humidity combined with temperature that triggers the
alarm. (Or some sudden change in any of these while the level is within
some range.) For my car I guess there are about 10 days a year when the
conditions are "right". Usually in October and April. (In Norway)

Thanks Peter, i have been using the exit the car and click lock button by the handbrake before closing the door (checking i have the key in my hand and not in the ignition...) and so far it has been fine it has not alarmed since, so I will stick with that method. As long as the car is locked I am happy with that.

My alarm went off again. This time I was parked within the range of a camera. So I looked at the recordings... There was a cat on my cars roof. Maybe it's the cats that has fooled me for 10 years?
