Hi,
I have a 98 p11 GT. I am having a bit of a problem with my speedo on my primera at the minuet. It works about 50% of the time but the times when it is working sometimes it tells me im doing 150MPH+ and others it works perfect. I have played with all the connections under the bonnet but i dont know what to check next. i have been told it may be a static problem but i think thats a bit far fetched. Could some one give me a list of things i can have a look at myself and a bit of information where on the car these things are? Thanks in advance Just |

Have you pulled the clocks out and checked the wires into the back mate?

Sounds like a possible problem with the speedo sensor mounted on the gearbox. The P11 does not have a speedo cable, it done electronically by the sensor on the gearbox. So it is either going to be a faulty sensor or a faulty speedometer, but I'd go with the sensor first sending spurious signals to the speedo. Not exactly sure of its location but it will be on top of the gearbox housing, probably somewhere at the back with wiring connected to it.

yeah the connections on the gearbox, check if wire feels loose on it? check for any signs of rust etc....maybe worth pulling the plug out giving it a clean etc...

I've changed your thread title from:
"speedo not working"
TO
"P11 GT - speedo not working"
Please ALWAYS use your car reference in the thread title, we have many different models of Primeras in here and referencing your model will get you the help you need from the right crew and also help others should they have the same question.
Good luck getting it sorted.
Many thanks,
Shaun |

I've recently had my sensor apart after doing a gear box swap, and using the new gear box off an Almera GTI which uses a different pickup to the primera. I can only guess it has something to do with the trip computer.
If your removing the unit out of the box from the pic that stevejones posted, be VERY careful. Its made of monkey metal and mine shattered which ment i had to order the main part plus a new pin at the cost of £25. Them electronic pickups are £150, so hopefuly its not that!
Just remove the connection, check the pins in the plug, squirt of WD40 on the pickup and check its all tight and try it. If not, screw driver and plyers out and it will pull out and check the cog.
