Hi all. Thought I'd introduce myself as I might be meeting a few of you at JAE this year. Been on AOC for a good while but have also signed up to Club Nissan and now NPOC.
I've got an N16 Almera SXE with the 136 2.2 dCi engine. Really enjoy the drive and beats the power of previous cars anyway so it puts a smile on my face . I'll give some more details on the car in the Members Cars section.
I know the engine and gearbox is shared by the later Primera's so would welcome any info on these that I don't know already! Although I will be browsing the forums now :)

Not a bad thing, always happy to see you guys popping over now and then
As you've noticed tho, the AOC membership extends to all things a normal member on here would have with the exception of the members cars section. That's the one thing thats gonna remain a Primera-fest.
Pop some piccies of the motor up in here mate, always nice to see new motors about the gaff

heh makes sense ya don't want Almeras cluttering up the whole place!
Brief history then... Not my first Nissan. Learnt to drive in an F reg
Micra owned by my parents. Reliable and solid. Swayed by Nissan because
of the Micra, later had a 51 plate Almera Activ 1.5, also reliable. Here it is:

After a while got the urgh for more power
I'm
pretty picky when it comes to cars (well, arent we all?!) so it took
ages to find the spec I wanted, a Grey 3dr, 2.2 dCi 136, SXE (I also
wanted a sunroof but they were so rare I would have been waiting for
years!) Finally found one in January and I've been really pleased with
it since
How it was from the garage:

...and how it is now Mods: Clear repeaters Seat Leon Cupra R front splitter Phase 1 Almera rear lights Blue painted calipers Debadged High flow air filter panel KYB Excel G uprated shocks H&R springs 16" Rota Grid wheels (205/55 tyres)

Before I put the rear shocks on:

Recently used Meguiars 3 step cleaning system, with Autoglym wheel cleaner and they worked a treat!

Shocks
and for the hell of it, a 'working on' shot

Got
a few more plans for it, with re-map being top of the list as soon as I
find out a little more about my ECU (Densos annoy me). Just had a
service and MOT and got through with no problems. Ya gotta love Nissans

Love those alloys, they really suit the N16. And a 2.2 oil burner as well. You're the same chap from TDCIforum as well, I don't frequent there that much as the office firewall blocks it for some reason. Must meet up some time and compare notes!

Cheers guys, yes we must! We'll crack this 200bhp somehow eh! At the mo I'm strugling to just get to 170bhp cause of the stupid Denso ECU

Indeed, I think 200bhp is a respectable target at just under 50% more power. Not expecting too much but being ambitious. Have you had yours on a rolling road recentlyor is that 170 guesstimate from how much the front wheels squirm? lol
|
Posted By: edk_N16
Date Posted: 19 Aug 2008 at 6:24pm
No not yet. I'm still stock so 'running 136bhp'... but as you well know it's probably not actually that. There's a group RR session kicking off on AOC in a couple of months so will get it done unless I can get the ECU problem sorted before then I'll RR it before because I'd like to the know the difference. Remap and exhaust should allow me to reach 165-170bhp hopefully. But I'm not expecting it.

About time I updated this.
In October I had a new exhaust made at Powerspeed in Kent. Highly recommended as their service was excellent and quality of work superb. It's turbo-back 2.5" stainless, all mandrel bent. Pulls much better at low rpm nad has meant driveability is much improved. Higher gears at lower speeds are more useable :) Performance wise it's freed up the engine and after a a trip to Surrey Rolling Road I could see I was running 138.2BHP and 213ftlb Torque.
A few cosmetic changes such as Nissan stainless kick plates and cleaned up the rust on the disk brakes and sprayed them gunmetal. I've also got my Nissan Pulsar (N16) bonnet from Australia so hoping to do the grille conversion early 2009.
Had a DPT box installed at Paramount Performance today. It's a stop gap until I get more done to the engine in the future and get a proper remap. Now the run before the box came out as 131bhp which is 7 less than at Surrey RR, so with this I'm taking all my readings with a pinch of salt really. But driving is better as it's stronger lower down, torque doesnt drop off nearly as much, and there's definite improvment in fueling past 3K I've also been told by Paramount that the power and drive should improve as this digital box learns.
I'd also like the mention that on the drive back I was doing 65mpg at 80mph in 6th
Now for the pics:
Thought I'd update with some pics after my exhaust fitting and recent meet. Exhaust is by Powerspeed in Kent.
Pics from an AOC and NPOC meet in October.

Trip to Powerspeed

Aus bonnet that I bought from a UK parts shop for £60. I have no idea how or why it ended up in the UK, but it meant I got it very cheap! I was very lucky finding it as it would have cost £300 to ship over otherwise.

lol read all my firend! and as the RR at Paramount was showing 131bhp before box, it's actually 17bhp gain from the box and 2.2bhp from the turbo back (however I never RR'd the car with it standard so it may well be more than that as manufacture's numbers are usually BS).

Update:
-Boot tidy and liner. -Alutec all aluminium strut brace.

Koni Sport Yellows all round now, installed myself My god are they good. Amazing the transformation while still using lowering springs.
Great write-up on fitting the strut inserts http://www.b15sentra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=63477 - Here .
They look stock... but they really aren't.

Adjustable wonderment :)

The damping is so suple with great feel of the road. Front's set to 5/8 stiffness and rears 6/8. Sticks like glue now (understeer and skipping reduced greatly) and even seems to have reduced my bump-steer.

hiya just been having a browse of diesel tuning sorta things and found these sites
http://www.tunit.co.uk/ - http://www.tunit.co.uk/
http://www.torqtec.com/?ma=about - http://www.torqtec.com/?ma=about
claiming theres boxes add 20 odd bhp to your car and p12 prims etc etc loads of cars...these things genuine or not??
|
Posted By: edk_N16
Date Posted: 25 Jan 2009 at 12:09pm
pinch of salt.
http://www.dieselpowertuning.co.uk/ - http://www.dieselpowertuning.co.uk/
This is the box I have. They claim high figures too, but it's not always acurate. Either way this box still performs very well. So expect a performance increase, but don't be too diappointed when the numbers don't reach claimed.
Companies just estimate because there's no way they could have tested their product on all the cars they list.
http://www.rstuning.co.uk/ - RS Tuning in Leeds are the only people that really can remap the Denso ECU and you're going to get better results with a remap. It's more expensive but would be worth it. The onyl trouble is that that YD22's GT1849V turbo is weak (Nissan must have asked Garret to build it to a budget) so adding the extra boost in the remap may have reliabilty problems. It's a risk basically. I plan to remap once I change the turbo. We're talking a year at least before I do that though as it'll be a costly proceedure. It will mean I can get a remap and up the boost then though, which should see me getting back about 170bhp
-------------

so you can remap a car after these chips go on??
what turbo will you be going for? i ask all these q's because im genuinely thinking of a diesel for when i eventually have a house and me and the mrs have one car...but the sorta diesel i can afford would be like these newer ones that kick out 170bhp or so standard but i really like ur almera alot and theyre relatively cheap to and a nissan lol

I'd take the box off and sell it on. The box does fueling, and the remap will do fueling and boost so there will be no need for the box.
You can pick up a 136 DCi for about 4k now (dammit lol). Re. turbo it's going to be either GT1749V (as on a TDI and can be boosted to over 200bhp as tested by many TDI guys) or a GT2056V (as on a BMW 525D, or a Nissan Pathfinder). Renrut did the numbers and the GT20 came out better on paper while the GT17 is proven it can take it... this is why I'm still pondering as to which turbo to get! I'd say that the GT17 would have less lag time being smaller.
To be honest I think I'll only know once it's on! That's the trouble with tuning this engine... no one's done it before so there's nothing to go on

Aw man, sorry to see the damage to the car
Good to hear the Koni's are the business though. Did they lower it much or just stiffen it up? I'd be tempted get something like that if it didn't drop the car, as at the moment I can fly right over those pillow type speed bumps without slowing much

The koni's are just dampers so couple them with standard springs and it'll be the same ride height for ya. Plus I'd say the handling would improve loads too, and you'd obviously be able to adjust the dampening force :) The lowering on mine comes from the H&R springs (35mm drop). They should be well matched as Koni's own springs drop the same (however I'm now looking into getting Koni's springs for peace of mind that I'd have the best setup for these dampers).

Ed, the dampers will have a slightly shorter damper rod and Koni springs aint made buy Koni. Keep the H&R dude as they are much better.

I colour coded my mud guards and I'm liking the look. Pretty good finish for rattle cans and also my first attempt painting anything properly :D
Cleaning: Pressure washer, Two bucket, Clay, Meguiars 3 step (paint cleaner, then polish, then wax).
Wanted the sun to come out but all I got was cloud. Watcha all reckon?

Wheels waxed and tyres dressed.

I had these mats in my last mera but it's taken me this long to get them in the new one.

Well I'm getting rid of the whole sat nav/climate control thing
actually. Going to manual heating controls from a basic S model and
putting in an aftermarket DIN stereo.
Finally decided on this for two reasons; I'm going to need gauges with
the tuning I have planned and I don't like the idea of A Pillar pods or
pods that stick up from the dash. So I'm going to use the OE screen pod
in the N16 to house the gauges which will keep them fairly hidden. The use of space in the dash is very inefficient (two DINs used up just for drives... ) so won't be able to put gauges there. Which brings me to the second reason. I think the OE sound is perticulary poor quality and so want to add aftermarket sound (nothing crazy, I just want quality). In removing all the OE equipment and redesigning the dash, it will give me room to add one.
Stereo will go under the vents where the current controls are now. Under that the heater controls, and then a cubby hole at the bottom like in the SE model.
I'd love to keep things as OEM as possible but as I've found, it isnt in this case.
OE dash.

S OEM Heater controls.

lol Wish I'd known, we could have just swapped!
The controls arent that great tbh though. A few things that bug me i.e. to change fan mode it's one press the circular button on the right, then pressure the softkey top right then keep pressing to scroll through the modes. The warning tone that comes on interupts your music, and comes on everytime the temp drops bellow 4 deg C. So if it's fluctuating between 3-4 that night, it's very annoying! It also does it for low fuel. The irony is it's a saftey feature but I find it very distracting while driving! Big ole BONG sound out of nowhere!!!!
It's almost great but it fails on good usability. I might be just picky, but if you look at how Nissan have done all cars since the N16 p2 and P12, you'll see that they changed how the climate control is controlled, with seperate knobs and buttons for those functions. They should never have merged climate with radio/cd and sat nav imo
The main failing for me though is the audio. 2003 model and it can't play MP3s on a CD, and no CD changer like there was in the pervious phase's Sport. It means it's very limited :/ If it had an MP3 6 CD changer and the speakers supplied were better, I probably wouldnt be doing this conversion.

i looked into putting that system into mine, but mine being a P1 and a entry level i don't think half of it will work,
even the later P1 has different controls to early P1

Yeah there's a lot of sensors and actuators that would need to be installed, not to mention the wiring loom needed for the control panel and drives! Having said that the wiring isnt the same for the manual controls pictured above. Removing acutators for the fan mode and heater is easy, but the fan speed and buttons are electronic and need plugs. I'm hoping I can have a good look at a p1 or p2 'S' model down a scrappy and see the difference and take the plugs away with me!

I like the look now & I guess it makes sense you making comment about how my coilovers were setup when we drove from where I picked you upto your motor?
Guess I will have to pay more attention in the future this car just gets better & better need to arrange a meet soon so we can check out all the new bits your

They werent fitted then don't worry! Was riding on stock springs and Koni dampers when you saw it, as I'd sold my lowering springs by that point and was waiting for coilovers to arrive :)
Meet sounds good. Would like to have a good look round yours as I havnt really seen it since it's been +T'd

Bloody brilliant! Went down perbright bends and red road today which are local driving haunts and it was simply superb. The car feels so sure footed and responsivness is quite a bit better than when I had lowering springs and Konis (which were damn good in their own right). Grip has certainly improved on acceleration but front tyres need improving I think as I get tyre squeal when shifting into second gear
Ride quality is still very good and is arguably improved over the Koni/lowering spring setup which I was impressed with as Konis are well known for their good damping quality.
The one thing that shocked me was that my bump steer (mainly on braking) and tramlining has near disappeared. I got this when I fitted lowering springs, it improved slightly with the Konis, then with stock springs and Konis it was still there even though I was at standard ride height (thus geometry standard).

Pulsar grille front end conversion is well underway now. At the bodyshop being painted at this moment :) DIY work was tricky but we got there. Pics to follow.
I've also been making a collection of parts ready for stage 2 which includes IC upgrade, hybrid turbo, remap with dastek unichip q, with gauges to check it's all running well:

My Dad just took his M3 evolution out from hibernation so thought I'd grab a pic :):

Big thanks to stufa for his help during this little project :)

A few pics showing the process. A journey that took over 14 months to complete! The idea started before I had even bought the car and I was playing with photoshops to see how I could improve the looks as I was never keen on the kidney grille on the N16. After a while I stumble across the N16 in other countries:
In Australia, Thailand and Malaysia the N16s look like this (or there abouts).

Found an aftermarket open mouth grille for it. Same fittings to the chassis as with my UKDM N16.

Photoshop fun finally ends with finding the grille and makes for a simple change rather than a fully custom bumper which featured in many earlier photoshops.

Found a place to buy one in Australia! It arrives :D

Importing the bonnet was looking to be expensive so I looked into getting the bonnet cut and shaped as per the Aus bonnets...also very pricey. Struck gold when I found one on Ebay, AND painted in my colour...I still dont know what it was doing in this country as it doesnt fit any cars here...

And so the work begins after getting hold of a second bumper from a scrppy for £8 :D... Huge thanks to stufagti on this as he had a large hand in it's construction. We make a great team!

Dodgy DIY work :D

Something that was played with in early photoshops that I decided to go ahead with:

Due to some alignment issues because of flex and what not it was decided that we should blend the grille with the bumper and figured it would look better blended and lined up correctly, rather than seperate and not quite right.
...and so how it was before it was sent off to be painted :D

With it first fitted on the car at the bodyshop :)

Later the OEM mesh/grille from the lower part of the bumper was cut to fit and the center section used for behind the new grille up top.
