Date Posted: 25 Aug 2015 at 9:36pm
Hello fellow owners and club members! Smile

As the subject suggests I have a problem with my P12 Sve (2003 2.2 Diesel). The problem is with the Navi and the Stereo and is of an intermittent nature. The Sat nav and audio cannot be accessed/turned on using the console buttons or the steering mounted control (audio and 'Info'). When this happens while driving, "Secure" in green gets displayed after a few minutes. After restarting the system (ignition on off couple of times) the problem eventually will get sorted out. When it does, the system works beautifully without any issues.

I have noticed that the problem will occur straightaway if the reversing camera has been used (car reversed out of driveway for instance). Other times it will just happen without any pattern (I have been observing only for 24 hours- I shall keep an eye out for any more patterns and update accordingly).

Kindly advise/ help me sort this issue out. Thank you everyone in advance.

Green secure message usually means failing or failed audio unit or a communication error with the nats unit. You r indicator are not on by any chance? might be worth checking around the car for any blown bulbs. Have you swapped any bulbs recently?

You could try this simple procedure just to eliminate electric interference issues

Timeshock! Glad to see your message. Your advise on other posts have been really helpful in the past with my mother's P12!

I actually fixed the earthing on the nearside rear bulb cluster as i had the typical fog lamp on the dash issue when braking or  indicating to the right.

Failing audio unit means... replacement of the DVD unit or the CD unit or is there a different box al together?

Kindly advise on how to investigate the NATS system issue. Could weak batteries on the key fobs cause an issue?

Thank you.

This NATS (Nissan anti-theft system) is so complicated and very little information is available about an audio fault that is difficult to know what to do.
The diagram indicates a communication link from the audio immobilizer to the IMMU which for some bizzare reason is also the SECU (smart entrance control system) so while it does not mention an issue between key (battery) and SECU it could be an indicator. Do you have another key?

There is a hidden menu access  here

http://www.npoc.co.uk/forum/p12-service-reminder-reset_topic3274.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.npoc.co.uk/forum/p12-service-reminder-reset_topic3274.html

selct audio and see if anything is thrown up.

The connection between system is made through the 29 pin connector from the AUDIO to SECU so a possible fault could lie here

It may just be indicating that the audio unit is failing, because the message is green it ruling out SAT NAV fault that would be red.

Is the NATS light normal Red Man0 does it come on while this issue is present?

I see. It does sound complicated for a DIY fix. I will have a look at the hidden menu. Thank you.

1) The Secure message has come on only twice. Other times the radio/CD feature cannot be controlled if already turned on. The volume gets locked at a certain level, the radio channel gets locked and the audio cannot be turned off using the "Off" button.

2) The steering controls (2003 model hence no cruise control- Black Remote) do not work either.

3) Bulbs are all okay. The earthing issue was sorted out - unless there could be more!

4) I have 2 keys. Both lock and unlock without any problems.

I have a spare CD unit and a spare Sat nav unit. If the unit is at fault, will replacing the CD unit solve the issue or is there another module ?

Update:

The self Diagnosis (via Hidden Menu) shows the CD Changer (dont have -Think it means the player)  and Audio unit in 'Yellow' as opposed to Sat Nav and controls in 'Green'.

Message: "The line to the following devices is not responding :  CD Changer / Audio Unit "

Ill check for loose connections. Otherwise looks like a replacement is required.

Kindly advise if the CD unit contains the audio unit as well or is there is a separate unit altogether.

Can radio specialists repair such an issue?

Thank you. Eagerly awaiting replies. Ouch

Thanks for the additional information, do you get this issue with both keys?

It is sounding like an audio player fault and the audio unit does contain the cd player, however on your model if a cd changer was fitted it would be located in the boot.

If you change the player then you will need t get it recoded by Nissan.
I would have thought an auto electrician specialising in  audio may be able to repair the unit, Clarion who manufacture them does but the cost normally puts people off.

Hi Timeshock!

Yes I can confirm the problem persists with both the keys.

There is a post or two on npoc that suggests independent garages are able to accomplish the re coding for £30- £40.

However I want to make sure it is really the audio unit that is the culprit.

The 2003 p12 has a steering remote. Does this make the units pre 2003 .E.g. 2002 incompatible or is the remote just a parallel wiring to the corresponding console keys. I am asking as I have a Cd and Sat Nav (donor for DC-DC converter for Mum's 2002 P12) unit in the shed.

I checked there is no CD changer. I think the software  is programmed that way so as to make it compatible with P12s with or w/o Cd changer.

Would you know if the temp gauge on the diesel model stays very low as compared to the petrol models. I am asking as I wish to make sure there are no other inter related issues.

Thank you for your support and advise. SmileClap

The change over on Primeras was 2004 when the electrics, audio and cosmetics were changed so you have compatibility with the other one.
I don't think coding is going to help you in this case, you have a fault somewhere that needs rectifying. If you swap out the unit and get it recoded you might get lucky if the fault is on the audio, if it returns then the fault is on the wiring/communication with the IMMU
The temp gauge should be around 11:00

The self diagnostic showed an issue with the Audio unit.

There are no other as such issues with the electrics.

When the audio runs, it function beautifully. But when it gets locked, it cannot be controlled with either of the controls- Volume Dial , Stop button on the centre console or the steering mounted buttons.

Is there anything in the ESM that could help me trace the issue and determine if it is a IMMU /NATS issue or the audio unit.

As for the temp needle, mine stays below cold for good 5 - 8 mins then climbs slowly to and 8 o clock position. Whereas in the other p12 (2002 1.8 sve petrol) in the household, it starts to climb slowly and stays at the 10/11 o clock 'ish position!

look at security Anti-theft and NAT and Audio

the temp seems too low, I can understand it staying cold for some time but once it starts to move it should be steady to 11:00, you might want to check the thermostat

Oh dear ! Looks like I bought a lemon!
The engine runs well. Drove over 150 miles with no issues except the initial audio system lock and the air con needs recharge- checked the power to the compressor (Magnetic Clutch)- was 0V, the "Hiissssssss" from the pipes was weak suggesting lack of refrigerant pressure and hence the power cut out to the compressor. (If this diagnosis makes sense- wanted to check if the system is leaky - Leaks = No "Hisss")

So you reckon the thermostat is opening pre-maturely and keeping the engine cooler than the operational temperature? The fuel consumption is normal. I think it would be worth checking the sensors first.

The audio unit since afternoon would not turn on whatsoever.

A few on here report the of all places Halfrauds will do a free check  on air con and money back if you have a leak.

Lmao! "Halfrauds"

Advise taken. Thank you Timeshock.

Still unsure which way to head with the audio situation. I have fixed the Satnav issue alongwith other minor ones on my mums p12.

But I got myself one and cant seem to tackle it. So disappointing :P

Update:

Problem summary:
  • The sat nav and climate control worked well even with the radio and cd functionality frozen.
  • On some occasions , the audio would not respond at all to the key/dial inputs or steering mounted audio remote.
  • On other occasions the audio would turn on normally but after some time would stop responding to any control inputs. Volume stuck at a certain level- Volume control inputs would bring up the level meter on the screen but no control. Radio channels stuck/ Blank.
  • On 3 occasions the 'Secure' message in green came up locking everything but the 'Info' function.
  • NATS symbol does not come up on the dash as part of the issue.
  • Self diagnostic through the hidden menu showed audio unit and cd player/changer at fault- Yellow check boxes as opposed to Green check boxes for Sat Nav and Control panel.
  • ECU reset using battery cathode disconnected for 30 mins and residual power drained did not solve any issues.
As such today I replaced the CD player/audio module with a 2002 model spare unit I already had. The circuit layout was slightly different however the pin layout for each of the connectors was identical.

Timeshock! confirmed that the 2002 and 2003 units would be compatible. Hence I replaced and installed the unit.

As expected the ''Secure'' in yellow has come up. A post on NPOC suggested an audio centre off A45 in Birmingham can re-code the replaced unit to match the ECU for £30. I got in touch with a few photos and the technician confirmed he can accomplish the task.

What do you think.  Am I on a reasonable right track?

Thank you in advance.Thumbs Up

The problem you have doing the swap is you immediately get the secure warning, now I don't know if there is a hierarchy of these messages so for example if you drive around for a while will it display green at any point that there is a fault. Therefore you could after coding be in exactly the same position, however if that happened it starts to isolate the possibilities.

Hello Timeshock!

Yes I agree. But I thought since nothing else seemed to malfunction. Even the NATS seemed to operate normally elsewhere in the car- Locking, Starting the engine etc it might really be just the audio unit failing.

Green 'Secure' as discussed multiple times on NPOC stands for Failing audio unit or Comms with NATS.

Only the audio kept freezing and locking or not turn on at all.

Anyway fingers crossed! Ouch

If you are in Swindon, you are not too far from the Clarion Service Centre.
A few years ago but the recode/virginising of the Radio was around £40.

http://www.clarion-service.co.uk/cs/Home.html

The Guy I spoke to was very familiar with the Nissan System.

It is indeed very close. Ill get in touch with then tomorrow itself.

btw have you got any experience with the problems I have been facing?

Kindly shed some light if possible.

Thank you

Seem to remember it being mentioned ( wickidude I think ) that while fitting an xcarlink he had forgot to reconnect one of his speakers and that produced a green secure, so could be worth checking your door speakers and there connectors.
Speakers can go o/c intermittent.

If in doubt give it a clout!

Electrolyte! (maybe too early to celebrate.)

But when I was viewing the car i saw a Screw cover broken on the driver's door suggesting the door card was taken out at some point. Ill have a look first thing tom morning.!

Speakers going o/c intermittent. Faulty em coil? i.e faulty speaker?

No sorry.
I had some involvement with finding the fix for the common Sat Nav problem that you experienced on your Mum's car. I spoke to Clarion Service. They were very knowledgeable.

Hope you get it sorted.

UPDATE:

The problem has been resolved. It indeed was the audio unit at fault. However before I just got the replacement recoded, I performed the following inspection(s):

1) Since the problem was intermittent, I suspected a loose connector. So plugged the original audio unit back in. Wiggled and Jiggled the 3 connectors and Voila!... It came on. Stayed on. Switched power on/of using the key of course. Still worked.

2) Left in the the car for a couple of hours came back and did not work. Once again a good shake, came on.

3) Checked the 3 connectors one by one and the input/ control connector (biggest/longest of the 3) was found to have some relation. So Shear type force is both the axes seemed to respond positively.

However on other occasions it did not seem to have a very direct relation to the issue.

4) Anyhow, I cut the connector off and soldered wires to to the pins on the audio unit and connected them to the corresponding loom wires using Chocolate bar block connectors.

5) To my disappointment, the problem persisted. Wiggling and shaking was the eventual solution every time suggesting a fault -- Probably a bad solder joint (Heat Expansion dependant- Similar to the Navi unit issue).

6) So the connector was installed back (using the block connectors -for the time being!) and the replacement unit was installed and of course the "Secure" in yellow was welcomed back in my life.

7) Finally the unit was re-coded by Steve from Tech2 Car Audio repair Centre in Birmingham for £30.

(I am not advertising. I am sharing a resource that people might find useful. He works very closely with Clarion)

It works 24 hrs later. Wish me luck! :D

Thank you Timeshock, Electrolyte and imckay!

Got a couple more niggles. New threads!

Definitely sounds like it has dry joints at the internal pins to pcb connection.
If you open it up you may be able to see them and resolder, then keep as a spare.
It would of course have to be coded back to the car if that ever happened , or maybe even sell it on.
Glad you're sorted and nice to know an independent has the equipment to recode.

Hello Electrolyte!

Yes that is what I guessed but I was so tired of opening closing the casing, removing plastics etc etc

I just wanted to stop investigating and getting the problem fixed. Luckily I was going that way so it was not a proper 'travelling to get fixed' journey.

Yes indeed he was well equipped for this job- hardware and skill set.

I have posted another thread regarding a temp gauge issue. If you find time kindly have a look and shed some light.

Thank you so much.

Hi all.
Sounds like we have fun and games with these "secure" with a green background.
My stereo doesnt work and nor does the central locking! So I can lock the thing:/
Main dearlein Ipswich just said "There sounds like there is a fault with the audio not talking to the key etc. we can't help".
Would it need just recoding as I need to get this car locked.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forumHandshake

It may or may not be separate faults, I take it you do not have a spare key to check the door locking?

If not try to re-code it, have you recently change the key battery?

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately I only have the only have the one key.
Teid the obvious lol, thought it was the fob battery, that didn't work.
Tried the programme mode to reboot the key. That failed.
Tried taking the battery off for 30 mins, stereo came on briefly, but couldn't
Scan for stations, then went back to secure mode.

Main dealer was as much use as a chocolate teapot. :(
Just wanty car to lock, that's the mail. Concern atm.

For security then, you can use the key manually, just remove the key cover on the passenger door to access it

I can't remember if it operates the central locking if it does not then use the lock button on the drivers door

Okay cokey. New to this motor so trying to still work it out lol.

Should the main dealer know how to sort these issues?
Is there anything that I need them to do as I going to a different one
Tomorrow and id rather that they didn't fob me off.

Cheers :)

Personally I would not go to a main dealer for anything, it is just going to be very expensive and I doubt they have anyone left there that can remember a P12.

You can try taking the cowls of the steering wheel to get access to the ignition barrel to clean the NATS antennae, that may resolve the secure message which I am assuming it is the green one ( there are also red and yellow secure messages) I doubt it is NATs causing entry issues but it may well be the SECU which is located in the drivers foot well.

Yep green screen. Who would be the best bet to help sort it? I get
what your saying bout the main dealer, but if not them who? as there
doesn't seem to be any Nissan specialist around here.
Ill try the clean up and see what happens. Wish me luck lol
